Just Released: New National Roadmap for Marine Renewables

Marine Renewables Canada (MRC) announced Marine Renewable Energy Sector Vision 2050 this week in Ottawa – a national roadmap describing how offshore wind, tidal, wave, and river current energy can support Canada’s growing electricity needs. This includes a target of more than one gigawatt of tidal energy by 2050, supported by both large-scale projects and smaller community installations on both coasts.

Highlights include:

·      Canada’s electricity demand is expected to more than double by 2050, driven by the electrification of transport, heating, industry, and new growth from data centres and clean fuel production.

·      Tidal energy can help meet this need while reducing fossil-fuel reliance in coastal and remote communities.

·      Tidal energy’s predictable output can deliver power during evening peaks and periods of low solar or wind output.

The roadmap details tidal energy activity underway in both BC and Nova Scotia, including renewed regulatory cooperation, new research and technology, and Indigenous-led community projects that are demonstrating the value of tidal in displacing diesel.

The document also identifies 14 actions to advance the sector, including:

·      federal leadership on interprovincial transmission planning

·      realistic long-term procurement targets

·      meaningful Indigenous partnership

·      investment in grid infrastructure

·      streamlined regulatory processes
