From Fundy to Orkney: Insights from a Global Tidal Energy Exchange

This spring, a local delegation traveled to the Orkney Islands in Scotland — a global hub in tidal technology — to explore how marine renewable energy can support clean energy goals, environmental stewardship, and sustainable economic development.

The visit, organized by FORCE and hosted by Orbital Marine Power and the European Marine Energy Centre, included representatives from the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs, the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq, Marine Renewables Canada, Eauclaire Tidal, and community partners.

The itinerary included:

  • A visit to Orbital's operational facility and viewing their O2 turbine in action - the world's most powerful tidal turbine.
  • A tour of the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC)
  • Cultural visits to significant neolithic sites, reflecting on shared heritage and the importance of respecting historical stewardship principles.

Along the way, participants shared perspectives, reflected on stewardship responsibilities, and discussed opportunities for future collaboration.

“Seeing these technologies in operation was a powerful reminder of what’s possible,” says Lindsay Bennett, FORCE’s executive director. “It reinforced how far the sector has come, and how important it is to collaborate early and openly as we develop tidal energy in the Bay of Fundy.”

Key takeaways from the exchange included the importance of environmental monitoring, site compatibility with traditional fishing areas, the importance of partnership and early community involvement — all crucial elements as Canada moves toward its net-zero emissions commitments and evaluates future tidal deployments in the Bay of Fundy.

“This is the kind of collaborative learning that tidal energy needs,” said Bennett. “Thank you to all who made this visit possible, including Orbital Marine Power, EMEC, and all the delegates whose openness and insight made the journey so meaningful.”
